Home Painting Tips
Are you ready for a spring clean refresh on your home? If you've already done a spring clean and you're still not satisfied with your results consider painting your home. I especially recommend this if you've not done a painting refresh on your home for many years. So where do you start?
If you have a paint supply specially shop close to you, they should be your first stop. No worry, not asking to buy paint there. I just wanted to take advantage of the pain specialists within the store. Who knows, you may just buy your paint there too. The whole idea is that you're looking for a paint specialist who is also an interior decorator. Bring pictures of your interior such as your trim, your furniture, curtains and floors. Allow them a little artistic freedom to choose colors that are new and modern. You may be pleasantly surprised.
This is the process that we went through to discover the colors are house should be painted. To be honest, I wasn't too sure about the colors of the interior decorator selected initially. I eventually decided to pick up the can of each color selected and just try. I was pleasantly surprised. Once I put the rest of the ensemble around the colors it looked fantastic. So in my opinion, it's worth a try.
What you selected your colors, the next step is knowing how to properly paint your interior walls. Believe it or not this can be tricky. First off, you do need to select a primer to cover the current paint. If you've wallpaper, consider removing it before painting. You will regret that extra step in the future. I've been asked is it worthwhile to tint the primer and my answer has always been, only if the color you putting on the wall is fairly dark.
Considering there's no wallpaper to be removed your first step is to wash the walls quickly. Next I would consider patching areas that have dents or scratches with a little bit of wall putty. After dries for 24 hours, lightly sand it. Next apply primer to the whole wall. You will need to doublecheck the instructions on your primer and paint for the drying times. You must keep within the minimum and maximum drying time for each coat. If you try to repaint too soon, you left off coat before. If you try to paint beyond the maximum drying time for coat, the wall could bubble as the coat before absorbs water from the new coat. Either way it is a mess. If you cannot paint the walls within the proper drying times, I'd recommend waiting until you can paint them start finish.
If you want a professional looking paint job, here's two quick pointers for you. The first pointer is to very carefully trim your paint. In other words, don't be sloppy we are paint is against the border like your ceiling or your trim of your room. If you do slop onto those other surfaces, make sure you've got the touch of paint to cover that up once it dries. If the other surfaces are painted sometime ago, and you selected latex paint you should be able to just wipe it up with a damp cloth. The next pointer is to wait for your paint to dry on each coat for almost the longest time permissible. Then very lightly sand the wall with a 150 or 200 grit sandpaper. This will remove imperfections between coats and it's what professionals do to get such a good finish.
So it's time to freshen your home for spring or even fall, consider painting your home and make it look its best.
